Do you ever daydream about turning your builder-grade patio into something truly special and functional? At Earthly Possibilities Landscaping, this is something we really enjoy doing for our patio and hardscape clients. Re-imagining and redesigning something that is often an afterthought is just as fun for us as it is for you. And not only does it increase your own outdoor quality of life, it’s the perfect way to increase the resale value of your home.
We did just that with our client’s landscape project in Urbandale, IA. We took a typical, far too small to enjoy, poured concrete patio and turned it into a beautiful, cozy, outdoor room, complete with a custom gas fire pit.
Before the Patio Redesign
And… The After
We worked with our client to come up with an overall design that greatly expanded the new paver patio’s usable space, by dramatically increasing the footprint. During the design phase, we helped the homeowner’s choose materials that were both natural-looking, complimented the homes color palette, and were as cost-effective as possible. For this project, we used Unilock’s Beacon Hill Flagstone pavers and selected their Bavarian color.
Remember that before photo, with the patio having nothing but straight lines? With the paver patio rebuild, we added in a variety of free-flowing curves, via color complimentary tan Unilock Series 3000 pavers, adding a dramatic element to a backyard that previously had none. We also took advantage of the ability to add a more graceful integration and flow to the staircase.
The Crown Jewel of This Patio: The Fire Pit
Our homeowner’s really wanted a way to increase the seasonal usage of their new patio. Adding a fire pit was the perfect solution to adding more outdoor days to the Spring and Fall seasons.
Again, we chose a Unilock product and went with their fire pit kit, and added a really nice looking bullnose edge. For the fire pit’s burner, we used a stainless steel burner from FireGear Outdoors.
One of the truly great things about installing a gas burner fire pit (besides no mess or smoke!) is that you can add the stone or fireglass of your choosing. This is the perfect way to add your own personal touch to your firepit and have it be eye-catching and interesting, even when the burner is are turned off. Here, the client chose to use FireGear Outdoors’ Caribbean Blue Fireglass, which looks absolutely amazing with, or without, the fire.
And the best part of this particular build is that enjoying a fire only requires the simple flip of a switch. No messing with wood and, more often than not, getting covered in smoke. It’s simple, clean, and no fuss. And that’s what will keep you from thinking, “Ugh…I have to build a fire.” and help welcome you to your outdoor living space.
